For International Travelers

Denver to Eagle Airport connecting flights.

If you're flying internationally to Denver (DEN) en route to Vail Valley, the DEN→EGE regional hop is almost always the better option than a 2-hour ground transfer from DEN. Here's how it works.

TL;DR
  • DEN→EGE hop is ~30 minutes on United (5+ daily) or American (2+ daily).
  • Book it on the same ticket as your international flight — through-checked baggage, single record locator, weather protection.
  • EGE arrival, then EME picks you up at Door 6. Door-to-door to your Vail Valley hotel.
  • Total time savings vs DEN→Vail drive: Roughly 1.5 hours less on a tired body, plus zero Vail Pass weather risk.

01Why connecting beats the drive

After a transatlantic or transpacific flight, the worst thing you can do is sit in a vehicle for 2 more hours. The DEN→Vail drive is 120 miles, crosses Vail Pass at over 10,600 feet (which can affect anyone sensitive to altitude or motion), and adds weather risk on top of an already long travel day.

The DEN→EGE regional hop is roughly 30 minutes airborne. Total from DEN gate to EGE bag claim is about 90 minutes including taxi, deplaning, and bag retrieval — saving roughly an hour over the drive even before you account for fatigue and weather risk. And the hop is at full pressurization, so altitude is a non-issue.

02Airlines flying DEN to EGE

Two carriers operate the DEN→EGE route directly:

United Airlines
5+ daily · Embraer E175 / CRJ-700
Operated as United Express. Most frequent service. Code-shares with Lufthansa, Air Canada, Singapore, Star Alliance.
American Airlines
2+ daily (seasonal) · CRJ-700 / CRJ-900
Operated as American Eagle. Heavier service in ski season (Dec-Mar).

Both airlines code-share with most major international carriers, so the DEN→EGE hop typically gets added to your existing through-ticket without re-booking from scratch. Ask your travel agent or check the multi-city booking flow on the airline's site.

03Through-checking and connections

Booking DEN→EGE on the same ticket as your international flight gives you three big advantages:

  • Bags through-checked. Your luggage is checked from your origin (e.g. London Heathrow) directly to EGE. You don't recheck in Denver.
  • Single record locator. Both legs are tied together. If your international flight is delayed and you miss the EGE connection, the airline is responsible for rebooking you.
  • Weather protection. If EGE is weather-affected (rare, but happens), the airline rebooks you on the next available flight or to DEN for ground transport — at no extra charge.

Buying the international and domestic tickets separately saves money sometimes but eliminates these protections. For Vail-bound trips with significant ski equipment, through-checked is almost always worth the small premium.

04Connection time — what to budget

Recommended minimum connection times at DEN:

  • International arrivals (after CBP): 90 minutes minimum. CBP wait at DEN ranges from 15 to 60+ minutes depending on time of day. Add a buffer.
  • Domestic-to-domestic connections: 60 minutes minimum (United-to-United is sometimes shown as 45 — that's tight with bags).
  • Late evening EGE arrivals: EGE last commercial arrival is typically around 11pm. If your connection lands you after 9pm, you're at risk of getting stuck in DEN if the international flight runs late.

05EGE arrival — what happens next

Once you land at EGE:

  • Deplane and walk to baggage claim — a single, small terminal. About 5 minutes.
  • Your Eagle Mountain Express chauffeur is waiting at Door 6 in the Ground Transportation Lot with a name sign. We track your flight in real time — even if your DEN connection runs late, your driver will be there.
  • Door-to-door delivery to your hotel in Vail Village, Lionshead, Beaver Creek, Aspen, or Snowmass. Same flat rate whether you're connecting or arriving direct.

06When to skip the connection

The DEN→EGE hop isn't right for every traveler. Skip it when:

  • Your DEN connection is too tight (under 90 min for international) and missing the EGE flight would cost you a night in Denver.
  • EGE has weather problems on your travel day — DEN→Vail drive may be more reliable in some storm scenarios.
  • You're traveling with very young children or anyone who finds regional jets uncomfortable. The CRJ-700 is a small aircraft.
  • You're combining the trip with a Denver day. In which case, see our EGE vs DEN comparison for the full breakdown.

For DEN→Vail or DEN→Beaver Creek ground transfers, our sister brand Vail Mountain Express handles those. Eagle Mountain Express services Eagle County Airport (EGE) only.

07Booking your EGE arrival transfer

Book your Eagle Mountain Express transfer when you book your flight, or at minimum 24 hours before EGE arrival. You'll need:

  • EGE arrival flight number (the regional hop, not your international flight)
  • EGE landing time
  • Hotel name and address
  • Number of passengers and approximate gear count

We track your EGE arrival flight in real time, so even if your international leg runs late and pushes back the DEN→EGE hop, your driver will be at Door 6 when you actually land.
