Travel Guide · Updated May 2026

Eagle Airport vs Aspen Airport which to fly into.

Aspen-Pitkin (ASE) is closer to Aspen, but it's a small mountain-valley airport with frequent weather cancellations and a 28-day closure each spring. Eagle County (EGE) is bigger, more reliable, and a 90-minute drive away. Here's the side-by-side comparison.

TL;DR
  • ASE is closest to Aspen (4 miles, 10 min) when it operates — but it's weather-cancellation-prone with limited direct flights
  • EGE is 68 miles from Aspen (90 min by ground) but has more direct flights, longer runways, and reliable weather
  • ASE closes April 23 – May 21, 2026 for runway maintenance — EGE is the only practical option during this window
  • Eagle Mountain Express services Eagle County Airport (EGE) only. We don't pick up at ASE
  • For most Aspen travelers: book EGE for the inbound (avoid weather diversions on Day 1) and ASE for departure (less time-sensitive)

01The 30-second answer

Fly into Eagle County Regional (EGE) for the inbound. The 90-minute drive to Aspen is a worthwhile trade for not getting stranded in Denver due to ASE weather diversions. EGE has direct service from major US hubs on United, American, and Delta — and the airport is open 365 days a year.

ASE makes more sense for the departure flight if your travel is flexible. Less time-sensitive, and the weather risk on the outbound day matters less than on the inbound (where a single delay can cost you Day 1 of skiing).

02Distance and drive time

ASE to Aspen: 4 miles, 10 minutes. ASE to Snowmass: 8 miles, 15 minutes. The drive from ASE is short and easy — when ASE is operating.

EGE to Aspen: 68 miles, 90 minutes via I-70 West and CO-82 South through the Roaring Fork Valley. EGE to Snowmass: 72 miles, 90 minutes. Neither route crosses a mountain pass; the drive is at relatively low elevation along the river valley.

03Weather reliability

ASE sits at 7,820 ft elevation in a narrow mountain valley with mountains on three sides. Winter weather (low ceilings, mountain wave turbulence, blowing snow) frequently cancels or diverts ASE flights — the airport's worst weather days are several per month in winter.

EGE sits at 6,540 ft on a relatively wide valley floor along I-70. Weather closures at EGE are rare — typically a handful of days per year. EGE's 8,000-foot runway and standard ILS approach make it accessible to a wider range of aircraft and conditions.

The practical result: travelers booked into ASE during winter should always have an EGE backup plan. We've handled plenty of customers who diverted to EGE when ASE weather forced a change.

04Direct flights

ASE direct service is limited: primarily United Express to Denver (multiple daily) and seasonal American Eagle from Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago. Aircraft are restricted to certain regional jets and turboprops due to ASE's runway length and altitude restrictions.

EGE direct service is much broader: United, American, and Delta operate from Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, and seasonal additions during ski season. EGE's 8,000-foot runway accepts mainline jets up to 737/A320 size.

05The 2026 ASE closure

ASE is closed April 23 through May 21, 2026 — a 28-day window — for required runway maintenance. The airport reopens for normal commercial operations on May 22, 2026.

During this window, EGE is the only practical commercial alternative for Aspen-bound travelers. Pre-book your private transfer 48-72 hours ahead because demand at EGE spikes during the closure.

06When ASE wins

ASE wins for: (1) very short Aspen trips where 90 minutes of ground transport eats too much time, (2) departure flights where weather risk matters less, (3) summer travel when ASE's weather record is better than winter, (4) Snowmass-specific trips where ASE is the closer airport.

07When EGE wins

EGE wins for: (1) inbound flights where weather risk matters most, (2) winter travel during peak ski season, (3) longer trips where 90 minutes of ground transport is a small fraction of total time, (4) any travel during the April-May 2026 closure window, (5) groups traveling from major US hubs without ASE direct service.

08Mixed booking strategy

The strategy seasoned Aspen travelers use: book EGE on the inbound (so a weather diversion doesn't ruin Day 1 of skiing), and ASE on the outbound (less time-sensitive, get back to Aspen for last-day skiing). Eagle Mountain Express handles the EGE → Aspen inbound from $399 flat-rate. The ASE departure ground transport is short enough (8 miles to Snowmass, 4 miles to Aspen) that ASE-based providers can cover it easily.
