Travel Guide · ASE Closure 2027 Access Plan

ASE closure 2027: Aspen & Snowmass via EGE.

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE) closes Sunday, April 4, 2027 at 11:00pm and reopens Friday, November 19, 2027 at 7:00pm — 229 days (about 7.5 months). During this window, EGE is the closest alternate for Aspen and Snowmass, with private door-to-door transfer options to the Roaring Fork Valley.

TL;DR
  • ASE closes Sunday, April 4, 2027 at 11:00pm and reopens Friday, November 19, 2027 at 7:00pm — 229 days (about 7.5 months).
  • The closure covers all commercial and general aviation, all terminal access, and helicopters.
  • Reason: voter-approved full runway reconstruction to FAA standards; the runway shifts west and widens from 100 ft to 150 ft.
  • Official alternates during the closure: EGE, DEN, GJT.
  • Best alternative: EGE (Eagle County) — 68 miles, 90 minutes by private transfer.
  • EGE has direct flights from ATL, ORD, DFW, IAH, LAX, JFK, EWR, PHX, SFO, MIA, YYZ.
  • Fleet options: GMC Yukon Denali (up to 5), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (up to 9), and Sprinter Van XL (up to 14).

01Why travelers choose EGE for Aspen/Snowmass

EGE is about 68 miles from Aspen and 72 miles from Snowmass, with a typical drive time of around 90 minutes. The route follows I-70 West and CO-82 South through the Roaring Fork Valley and avoids Vail Pass entirely.

During the April 4 to November 19, 2027 closure, all ASE traffic must route through official alternates: EGE, DEN, or GJT. For Aspen/Snowmass trips, EGE is the closest alternate airport and the most direct transfer corridor.

Note: ASE separately closed April 23 to May 21, 2026 (28 days) for routine annual pavement maintenance. That completed 2026 maintenance closure was smaller and unrelated to the 2027 full runway reconstruction.

02Your airport options for Aspen/Snowmass

Three commercial airports are official alternates during the 2027 ASE closure. Ranked by practicality for most travelers:

1. Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) — recommended

EGE is 68 miles from Aspen and 72 miles from Snowmass — the closest reliable commercial alternative to ASE. The drive takes about 90 minutes via I-70 West and CO-82 South through the Roaring Fork Valley. The route crosses no mountain passes and avoids Vail Pass entirely, making it the most weather-resilient option.

EGE serves United, American, and Delta with direct flights from Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Newark, Phoenix, and San Francisco. For most US travelers, an EGE direct flight will be the fastest and most reliable routing.

2. Denver International Airport (DEN)

DEN is 220 miles from Aspen and the drive takes 4 to 4.5 hours via I-70 West and CO-82 South. The route crosses Vail Pass — which has weather closure risk — and adds significant time vs the EGE option. DEN makes sense only if you cannot find an EGE flight from your origin or if airfare savings exceed your added ground-transport and time costs.

3. Grand Junction Regional (GJT)

GJT is 125 miles from Aspen with a 2.5-hour drive. United operates limited service from Denver. GJT is a reasonable backup if EGE and DEN aren't workable, but flight schedules are constrained and the route passes through Glenwood Canyon — beautiful but occasionally weather- impacted.

03Why pre-booked private transfers matter

During the 229-day 2027 closure window, EGE arrival waves can tighten same-day transportation choices. Pre-booking gives you a confirmed vehicle, planned pickup timing, and direct service to your destination.

  • Rental car inventory can tighten during ski peaks and holiday windows.
  • Shared shuttle schedules may fill earlier in the day.
  • Rideshare availability can be limited for 90-minute mountain routes.

04What to expect on the EGE → Aspen drive

The route is straightforward: I-70 West from EGE for about 30 miles, then exit south onto CO-82 through Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, and Basalt into Aspen. About 90 minutes total in normal conditions.

Spring weather in the Roaring Fork Valley is generally mild — late April through May is the start of mud season, with melting snow at lower elevations and lingering snow on the ridges. CO-82 occasionally sees brief weather delays around Glenwood Canyon, but the route stays at relatively low elevation and avoids Vail Pass. Our chauffeurs monitor CDOT continuously and adjust departure timing if needed.

Winter 2026-27 is not affected: ASE stays open through the ski season, then closes April 4, 2027 just after ski season ends, and reopens November 19, 2027 just before the 2027-28 winter season starts. A new commercial terminal and new FBO also break ground in April 2027 and are scheduled to open in 2029; the existing terminal remains in use once the runway reopens in November 2027.

05Vehicle options for Aspen and Snowmass transfers

Choose based on group size and gear:

  • GMC Yukon Denali (up to 5 passengers): ideal for couples and families with luggage and ski equipment.
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van (up to 9 passengers): best for larger groups.
  • Sprinter Van XL (up to 14 passengers): best for full ski groups and events.

06When to book

For the April 4 to November 19, 2027 closure window, book your EGE → Aspen or EGE → Snowmass transfer when you book your flight, or at minimum 48 hours before arrival. Saturdays and holiday windows are typically busiest. Same-day bookings are accommodated when vehicles are available.

07If ASE flights cancel or divert

During the April 4 to November 19, 2027 closure, all ASE traffic must use the official alternates: EGE, DEN, or GJT. Outside that window, weather or operational constraints can still affect ASE flights and rerouting through EGE is often the most practical backup. Eagle Mountain Express services EGE only, with private door-to-door transfers to Aspen and Snowmass.
